Neighborhood

Fairfax is a warm and welcoming residential neighborhood tucked into southeast Oakland with a strong sense of community and local character. The neighborhood is lined with charming early 20th-century homes, primarily from the 1920s and 1930s.  It is known as a friendly place where neighbors love walking their dogs and getting to know one another.  Its smaller, tight-knit feel means quieter streets, a relaxed pace of life, and easy access to local amenities, all without sacrificing Oakland’s vibrant urban energy.  Brookdale Park anchors the neighborhood as a gathering spot, hosting beloved community events like a Jamaican Food Festival in the spring. The area’s diverse dining scene,  from Caribbean and Nigerian to Mexican, reflects Oakland’s rich cultural fabric.  Some of the local favorites are Golondrinas, Degrees Plato, and Ghost Town Brewery.  And of course, for grocery shopping, it is hard to beat Farmer Joe's Market.  A magnificent place to shop, and less than 2 miles away!  Commuters will appreciate the convenient access to I-580, I-880, and the Fruitvale BART station, making it an easy base for getting around the entire Bay Area.

From the Sellers

Welcome to this home—we’ve loved it deeply, and we hope you will too.
This house has been a place where life naturally unfolded—quiet mornings, lively evenings, and the kind of everyday rhythm that turns a space into something meaningful over time.
One of the things we’ve always loved most is how alive this home feels—especially outside. The backyard has been the heart of it all for us. It’s where we’ve spent sunny afternoons, gathered with friends, and enjoyed that easy indoor-outdoor flow that makes hosting feel effortless.
The sunsets from the kitchen and back yard are beautiful, with a peekaboo view of the water. From the second floor window, you can see the hills and all the way to the bay. The garden has its own rhythm too—bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and ladybugs regularly pass through. There have been moments when the butterflies landed right on us, which still feels a little magical every time.
Inside and around the property, there’s plenty of room to live and create. The garage offers generous storage and workspace potential, and the additional structures provide flexible space for projects, guests, an office, or whatever you might imagine.
The neighborhood itself is something we’ve truly appreciated. There’s a vibrancy here, and neighbors genuinely look out for one another. It’s the kind of place where you feel connected while still having your own space.
The location makes everyday life especially easy. We often joke that everything in Oakland is about 15 minutes away—but from this spot, it really is. Whether heading toward the hills, across town, or staying local, getting around is simple.
We’ve loved being close to the Laurel District, with its incredible mix of local spots along MacArthur and High Street—favorites like Degrees Plato, Golondrina, and Sequoia Diner. We’ve also enjoyed time at Ghost Town Brewing Company, where it’s easy to relax while kids have space to move around. And finally our very favorite, Old Weang Ping Thai- the best and most authentic hidden gem. Nearby markets like Farmer Joe's Marketplace make it simple to find great ingredients, and there’s a small neighborhood produce stand we’ve come to rely on as well.
R. especially loves that the Melrose Branch Oakland Public Library is just two blocks away. L. really loves walking to Donut Savant for mind-blowing donuts.  And when we wanted a quick nature reset, heading up High Street to Redwood Regional Park for a hike was always easy and grounding.

We’ve cared for this home thoughtfully over time, always aiming to maintain it well and improve it with intention.
More than anything, this home has been a place to gather, to recharge, and to feel grounded. We’re excited for whoever comes next to make it their own and create their own version of what we found here.
Wishing you all the best as you consider it.
