Amid views of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, giant Redwoods, and the renowned architecture of the neighborhood (Temple of the Wings, Hume Castle…), this extraordinary residence suits the surrounding splendor. It is a triumph of design, blending modern construction principles with the timeless elegance of an Arts and Crafts influence. Conceived by architect Robert Mueller in 2014, the home pays homage to Berkeley’s architectural legacy—most notably, the work of Bernard Maybeck—while establishing itself as a contemporary landmark of thoughtful craftsmanship and refined living. The jewel-box west-facing exterior and flat-sawn trumpet flower balustrades (Interior and exterior), masterfully echo the neighborhood's pedigree.

Mueller's unique approach blends Craftsman ideals with contemporary Classicism. The foyer's classic entry portico and columns introduce an expert vernacular of uniquely purposed rooms. Moment-to-moment, the architectural language shifts, revealing an exquisite orchestration of spatial articulation. A barrel-vaulted ceiling softens your entry, a pyramid peaks above the dining room, and hefty beamed ceilings soar above a sunken living room. Every room asserts its own identity, with ceilings that define and elevate, shifting in height and form to create an ever-evolving sense of place.

The expansive kitchen—anchored by a casual seating area—blends form with function. Massive stone counters were chosen to reflect the green surroundings while rich craftsman hardware on elegant custom cabinetry wink at history. Connected smart switches and voice-controlled amenities elevate the very modern present. Ginkgo leaves adorn contemporary fixtures in the dining room with a subtle nod to Maybeck’s fascination with bringing the outside into the dwelling. Inspired by old William Morris prints of the past, the powder room is adorned in orange poppies, naturally lit through a demure skylight.

The lower hall repeats the barrel vault and becomes a well-lit gallery announcing the four sleeping rooms. The primary bedroom is given distinction with its own foyer with a hardwood platform. Every moment is considered large or small. Small intrigues are created as an intimate reading nook or an upholstered bench makes use of transitional spaces. Details abound as the entry portico’s shape is repeated around several windows and closets adding sophistication to otherwise quiet construction.

The current owners’ impeccable style and ongoing care have further improved the structure and enhanced its luxury. Beautiful surrounding hardscaping and elegant landscaping is a delight to walk through and allow many windows to frame flowering perennials. The lower deck was added with an indulgent six-person spa, outdoor shower, and adjoining gym. The wine cellar caters to connoisseurs with earthquake-ready wine racks. Solar panels provide energy for the future. At once a study in architectural excellence and a sanctuary of modern luxury, this Berkeley Hills residence is a rare offering—a home that pays tribute to the past and redefines the future of sophisticated living.

This park features a huge garden with amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay. The other park is the Live Oak Park, a wooded area that features recreational fields, playgrounds, and walking trails.  This home is less than a mile down the Berkeley paths to Chez Panisse (0.9 miles) and the rest of the Gourmet Ghetto, 0.9 miles to the Greek Theatre and campus.

North Berkeley is known for its wide variety of food and drink choices. In town, there are plenty of restaurants and bars to visit, many of them highly rated.
