Forest Hill, San Francisco

Perched on a serene, tree-lined street in the coveted Forest Hill, this 1924 Spanish Colonial Revival masterfully combines historic charm with contemporary updates. The expansive 3,145-square-foot residence makes a breathtaking first impression with a formal foyer that flows into a grand living and dining commons, defined by coved vault ceilings, rich hardwood floors, and a dramatic fireplace. Designed for a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle, sliding glass doors dissolve the boundary between the great room and a two-story tiled deck, which overlooks a lush, vast backyard filled with mature plantings.

The heart of the home is a meticulously remodeled chef’s kitchen featuring quartz countertops, premium SubZero and Bosch appliances, and a custom movable island. A sun-drenched breakfast nook with French doors offers direct deck access. The main level also hosts the primary bedroom, complete with a walk-in closet, as well as a beautifully renovated dual-sink bath. Ascending the central staircase, the light-filled upper level reveals two generous bedrooms, a dedicated office with professional studio lighting, and a magnificent family room anchored by elevated redwood-planked ceilings and wet-bar potential. The home’s versatile floor plan extends to a lower-level flex room, ideal for a playroom or office, featuring a half-bath and direct garden access, while the large garage provides a 250-bottle wine closet, laundry, and ample storage.

This residence offers an unparalleled lifestyle close to JP Murphy Park and the Forest Hill Muni Station, with the added prestige of the Forest Hill Association. Residents enjoy exclusive access to the historic Bernard Maybeck-designed clubhouse and impeccably manicured community gardens, all within one of San Francisco’s most storied and tranquil neighborhoods.

about this

Neighborhood

Forest Hill is a leafy, century-old enclave of large estate homes, manicured lawns and flowering gardens so exclusive its almost unknown in San Francisco. That might be the way its residents like it. Think gated community without the gates, and you'll have a sense of the serenity, privacy, and tranquility of Forest Hill, the only neighborhood in San Francisco that has its own homeowners association. In the center of San Francisco, Forest Hill has ambiance of a small town.

Beneath its tree-shaded winding streets, the 650 homes of Forest Hill follow the contours of Twin Peaks. The hillside provides spectacular views of the pacific, the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. Stately homes are built in styles ranging from Spanish Mission to California Modern, with French Normandy, English Tudor, and Cotswold Cottage adding a sense of history. Noted architect Bernard Maybeck designed the historic clubhouse on Magellan Avenue, built by members on weekends, in 1919.

Forest Hills does open its doors however. Each August, classical musicians from around the world perform at the clubhouse, in Forest Hill Musical Days. This chamber music festival founded in 2003 by pianist Mari Kodama and her husband, conductor Kent Nagano, who both live in the neighborhood.

Off the beaten track, Forest Hill is nonetheless close to West Portal Avenue and its shops. Forest Hill or West Portal stations provide MUNI service to Union Square and the Financial District via a short 20-minute commute.
