Features
Perched beautifully above the historic central street of South San Francisco,
Grand Avenue, the 124-year-old Victorian has been brought back to its
original grandeur by the expenditure of an immense amount of love and
over $1.8 million on the Victorian home, its Victorian gardens and the 2
unattached rental units on the property.
The exterior entry landing provides an opportunity to view the craftsmanship
of the expert carpenter who created and designed the unique front door.
The door features an etched glass insert designed and cut by a master
craftsman, Andreas Lehmann. His masterwork is further incorporated into
the landing in the 2 etched windows on either side of the front door. The
windows were designed and created by Lehmann to compliment his front
door’s etched glass window.
Though square footage was added to this Victorian for the foyer, the
product is marvellously welcoming and perfectly in harmony with the
building. The foyer is 2 stories high to accommodate the staircase which
incorporates 124-year-old details like the original newels. The central
lighting for the room is a detailed vertical bronze chandelier from a
mansion in Santa Cruz.
Immediately to the left of the foyer is the Parlor which was left mostly
untouched relative to its turn of the 20th century character. The primary
feature is craftsmanship that has disappeared during the intervening
124 years. The moulding on the ceiling around the room is beautiful to
behold. But, that master plaster artisan out did himself in the creation of
the plaster ceiling medallion that adorns the canter of the room. It must be seen.
The Parlor is also home to more of the glass masterwork of the gentleman
who etched the windows at the front door. Above the fireplace, dominating
the marvellous Parlor, is a mirror that Adreas Lehmann designed and built
especially for this room. Viewing the mirror gives one a deep appreciation
of the unequalled craftsmanship of Mr. Lehmann. It, too, must be seen.
Verbal description doesn’t do it justice.
An archway from the foyer leads to a large room and a dining room meant
for living. Victorian detail was kept in mind in the white chair rail and wainscot
panelling. Appropriate wallpaper with a metal ceiling displays a chandelier
that blends into the room beautifully.
The dining area boasts similar panelling and wallpaper as well as the tin
ceiling. A bedroom adjoins the living space. The modern kitchen is to the
left of the dining area and is opposite a double door that opens to the garden.
A bathroom opposite a small room, perfect for an office, completes the first floor.
The upstairs floor contains 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The largest
bedroom is an ensuite with a large bathroom. The hall bathroom is also
large and easily accommodates a great amount of storage and bathroom
paraphernalia. All the ceilings upstairs are high and each bedroom door
boasts a charming detail from the bygone era.
Above each door is a transom window.
The garden of the Victorian is stunningly beautiful. A white pergola in the
back of the garden is not only delightful, it’s of course, quite functional. It
is perfectly suited for a barbecue or a Victorian garden party. The fountain
is placed in such a manner that it will provide both a gurgling background
noise as well as an attractive Victorian garden ornament at the party.
Also in the garden is an inviting stone/cement table and benches. And,
the entire garden is amazingly private. Crisscrossed lattice work in the
garden is designed in such a way that it provides privacy, yet frames the
house and accentuates
the house’s beauty.
Overall, the property includes a the 4-bedroom / 3 bath Victorian
single-family-residence (SFR) along with two income units. Not just the
Victorian has been thoroughly redone. The 2 smaller unattached units
have also been remodelled and upgraded with premium materials, fixtures,
and appliances. Everything is move-in ready. There are no tenants in
any of the units. Each unit has a garage and parking space. The property
is grandly located on Grand Ave. just 2 blocks from the vibrant shopping
and restaurant district in downtown. It is close to major bio-tech companies
that have transformed South San Francisco. It is a 6-to-8-minute walk to
CalTrain, a 5-minute drive to Bart, and has very easy access to Highway
101 and Interstate 280. It is difficult to imagine a more perfect locale.

Neighborhood
South San Francisco is perhaps best known among Bay Area residents for its hillside sign, which has broadcast the city’s slogan ("The Industrial City") to passing motorists on Highway 101 for decades. In the late 1920s, the city approved a bond to have the slogan emblazoned in 60-foot cement letters on the aptly named Sign Hill. Prior to the annual “big game” between Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley football teams, the sign’s letters used to be painted in each school’s colors. Now, players from the city’s El Camino and South San Francisco high school football teams paint the sign’s letters with their colors before playing each other in an annual game. South San Francisco, or “South City” as it’s affectionately called by Bay Area residents, is located four miles north of San Francisco International Airport.
