about this

Neighborhood

Cross Alcatraz Avenue, which divides Oakland and Berkeley, and you’ll find yourself in Rockridge, one of Oakland's most desirable, charming, and convenient neighborhoods. Housing in Rockridge is a combination of charming bungalows, cottages, classic Arts and Crafts dwellings, and large brown-shingle houses. Its leafy streets are mainly residential with long stretches of commercial shops and restaurants along College Avenue.

Rockridge offers an easy commute into San Francisco via the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station, as well as access to the University of California, Berkeley Campus. The 100-year-old, four-acre campus of the California College of Art and Crafts is nearby. Food-and-drink purveyors in Rockridge provide the best from around the world and local farms. Rockridge Market Hall, which takes its cue from the French Marché, offers numerous individual food and flower shops open to the sidewalk. Dozens of restaurants, cafes, and boutiques line bustling College Avenue, Rockridge's main drag.

A PERSONAL NOTE

378 Hudson Street has been our home in the heart of Rockridge for 20 years, enveloped in a warm, connected, and vibrant community. Purchased before starting our family, we have had fun hosting a multitude of happy occasions over the years, enjoyed our garden sanctuary, our home, our neighbors, and the wonderful variety of amenities Rockridge has to offer.

We celebrated many milestone events in our spacious backyard. We hosted family, friends, and neighbors. To accommodate larger groups, we added in round tables, chairs and umbrellas throughout the garden, and had local musicians to entertain, all whilst building beautiful memories.

Our house provides the ultimate flexibility with many great indoor and outdoor places to gather and enjoy, regardless of the size of the gathering - from a four-person dinner party to a one-hundred-person event. The deck, directly off the kitchen, makes it easy to grill any night of the week or sit by the fire pit in the garden for a cozy chat or roast marshmallows. The mood-setting is perfect with the string of lights, garden plants, and flowers everywhere. This has been our oasis in a big city.

We made good use of our home’s extra spaces – the backyard “shed” and the basement – for our home office, exercise area, kids’ hangout, art projects, hobbies, quiet times, private meetings, and parties. The basement provided us with ample storage, too.

Indoors, our large table in the dining room hosted everyone or it became the homework and project table. Sitting in the front room is so cozy with the sunlight pouring in, or to watch thegorgeous sunsets, or to gaze at the tree out front, that is “on fire” in autumn, when the leaves turn vibrant hues of red and orange. Our front porch is incredible for morning coffee, sitting on the steps to watch folks pass by, or evening chats at sunset.

The long kitchen counter was ideal as the ultimate gathering place for our family and preparing meals. Our friends often would stop by for a glass of wine and chat while we were cooking. Our daughter would do homework there and we could all be together. Bar stools kept the place tidy and convenient, especially as a breakfast spot for slumber parties.

We hope this home, garden, and community will give you much joy. The variety of flowers, herbs, and fruits from the trees include juicy lemons, delicious black mission figs, pink lady apples, peaches, and plums that all thrive in the front and back yards. Flowers bloom each season, everywhere, especially milkweed and colorful ones  that are magnets to monarchbutterflies and hummingbirds. If you enjoy gardening and relaxing outside, this house will give you so much pleasure.

We used to host a “plum-picking & baking” event. We placed ladders in the back under the plum tree for neighbors and kids to pick, then we would bake plum pie and give away the extra plums. We enjoyed watching our daughter and her friends play in the backyard, jump on the trampoline, and, to their great joy, give away or  sell items in our front yard to neighbors..

Hudson Street and Rockridge neighbors are a close-knit community that we loved, forging many special connections and creating long-lasting memories and friends for our family. The neighborhood has a deep sense of community, warmth, and a variety of qualities and experiences to enjoy. To name only a few - we enjoyed greeting neighbors, joining people strolling on the vibrant College Avenue, dining at one of the many top-tier (and we mean it!) delicious restaurants for dinner and chatting with neighbors and friends as they pass by, the
taste of Celebes Kalose coffee in the morning at Hudson Bay Café, the splendor of gourmet Market Hall, the convenience of shopping at Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores, perusing the variety of shops at any time, the proximity of Cole Hardware, taking our daughter for story time at the Rockridge Library or going to the Tool library, and Frog Park.

There’s so much more we enjoyed in the area - visiting the Chabot Space and Science Center, hiking in the Regional parks, excursions to the Little Farm and steam trains in Tilden Park, being near UC Berkeley, and so much more! AC Transit, BART, and access to the freeway are all a few moments from us, with a 20-minute ride into San Francisco on BART. There are many great dog-walking areas, children riding their bikes, the Sunday Farmers Market at the Claremont DMV is a gem, and a fun activity for all in the community, easily accessible from our home. The Rockridge annual street fair, the Planning Committees (FROG, Library, Community), and annual Halloween parade are a few ways to get involved. Hudson Street is known for Halloween, so make sure you have candy ready to hand out during the activities where children abound and a warm community atmosphere exists for parents and children to enjoy together.

We have made 378 Hudson Street a home that our family loves and cherishes. This authentic Craftsman-style house has a unique mix of modern and vintage features and many spaces to enjoy throughout the house, garden shed, and basement areas.

We hope to find a new owner who will cherish our dear neighbors, our house and garden, the fruits from the trees, the warm community, and all the qualities this place has to offer. We hope the next owner will build beautiful memories as much as we have and beyond.

Best regards
