I write this letter bittersweet as I say goodbye to the home I have loved so much.  Over 17 years ago, my Realtor said "I found your house."  I didn't believe it; I had never planned to live in Woodacre.  She said, "Go see the house and let me know."  My heart skipped a beat, it was love at first sight.  What I couldn't imagine then was the magic that would unfold once it was ours.

We first walked across the threshold, hands squeezed tight kids in tow.  It was calm and quiet as we settled in.  Boxes unpacked and furniture placed, we slowly understood that it would become our sanctuary.  

Not one day did we ever tire of the view.  Mornings with a cup of coffee watching the wildlife emerge.  Hummingbirds and finches scattered about.  Even owls and eagles flew passing on their way to a more secure location.  Wild sunsets painted the sky with their glory.   An evening cup of tea watching the fog roll in from West Marin knowing we'd soon be nestled by the fireplace.  Every day felt new and better than the one before.  We always seemed to be in awe that this was our home no matter how many years passed.  I still feel that way 18 years later.  

As the years flew by, we knew we had chosen a paradise.  We could find a shady spot and swing under an ancient oak.  We could bake in the hot all-day sun skipping across the backyard in the morning to the front yard at the end of the day.  A cool breeze and the scent of jasmine while bunnies hopped and hummingbirds drank their fill.  Always peaceful.  Always home.

As our family grew it seemed our magical house always knew what we needed.  A go-cart path around the yard, a driveway jump off that funky bump, a tree fort with a swing to scare all the neighborhood kids.  It has been a soccer field, a baseball diamond, and finally a basketball court.  Ever changing, growing and expanding as we did.  

As the kids left home, our house shifted once again.  The magic as powerful as ever quieted to a low hum.  Coffee on the back steps while reading in the hot sun became both the joy of silence and the longing for kids playing somewhere within earshot.  This time there were no kids.  Just us and the hummingbirds and butterflies.  A full flower garden that didn't break with a basketball landing.  Time for a bouquet and breakfast with a few fresh-picked eggs, tomatoes, peppers, and cilantro.  Music and making breakfast while overlooking Woodacre Ridge- incredible.  The smell of freshly picked sweet peas nibbles at your nose.  That kitchen must have been magic too because it has held well over 25 friends and family who gladly squeezed in and around each other laughing and eating to their hearts' content. 

We have loved and lost in this home.  We have cried tears of joy and laughed till our slides split.  Its walls are filled with music, love, and laughter.  As with so many things in life, it is time to say goodbye.  It is time to share our magical home with someone else.  It is indeed bittersweet.  I will truly never forget the sanctuary that gave us witness to the glory of life outside in its yard, but also gave life to those who called it home.
