From the Sellers

Some of the best days, weeks, and years of our life were here on Sequoyah Road!

A little bit of history… The house was built in 1954 by the mayor of Oakland, John Reading. He lived here with his family for 30+ years.  It was a real mid century beauty - you can see the framed blueprints.  At the time, Keller didn’t exist and Sequoyah was a dead-end. It’s known as the Reading house in the neighborhood to this day.

The Readings sold to a couple that did a lot of work to enlarge the house; they added the pool. The Diandas bought the house in the 90s and their nieces and nephews spent many summer days in the pool.  We bought it in 2014 when we moved back to Oakland after three years in Asia on assignment. Before our move we lived in Rockridge but when we returned we wanted to have more room to spread out and be closer to trails and open space.  We spent a few years modernizing the house and amplifying its mid century bones.

We love the privacy, open layout, indoor/outdoor flow, the gym, pool, and hot tub. It was a great place to be during the pandemic! It’s deer-fenced which allowed our dogs to run around all day safely. It’s usually about ten degrees warmer in Sequoyah Hills than it is in Rockridge or Montclair which makes the pool a popular spot (and we loved having air conditioning). At one point we had a basketball hoop and pickleball court in the driveway, a trampoline in the backyard, and a ping pong table near the pool!

A few more notes to share:

  • We called the area in the back the “little farm.”  We kept chickens for seven years.  The market garden provided many healthy and fresh meals.  Our daughter raised goats as part of 4H and at one point her baby goats lived in the backyard!
  • The Sequoyah Country Club is a gem.  We went to dinners and parties with friends and our daughter took tennis lessons there.
  • We loved hiking in the hills!  Our favorite trail starts at the Chabot Stables at the top of Keller (to the left) where you can find a 45-50 minute loop through Bort Meadow.  We also love the trails at Parkridge and Grass Valley - all dog friendly!
  • Oakland Airport is soooo convenient!  It’s like your own personal airport.
  • We understand that they will finish the development at the bottom of the hill in the next few years and it’s likely to include a grocery store, bank, and other amenities. In the meantime, the new market on Skyline at Redwood Road is lovely - lots of organic and specialty items.  We do a lot of shopping at the family-owned Farmer Joe’s off of 580.

Finally…Why are we selling?  Our kids are grown (one graduated from college and one is in college) so we’re ready to downsize .We will miss the house on Sequoyah Road and hope that the new owners make as many great memories as we did!

Warmly, Natasha, Greg, Lucas, and Danica
