Lake Street District / Richmond

Stretching from Golden Gate Park to Lake Street, and from Arguello Boulevard to the Ocean, you’ll find the beautiful Richmond district, a uniquely diverse neighborhood that features a mix of elegant residential housing and a tremendous variety of restaurants and stores. Homes in this neighborhood are centrally located with easy access to great food, historic parks, and all kinds of entertainment. The prestigious Lake Street sub-district is a section of the Richmond that abuts the Presidio, and is one of the most desirable parts of the entire Richmond neighborhood.

Foodies will find the Richmond District’s restaurant scene to be unbeatable. Here you will find every culinary tradition you desire, ranging from Asian to French, Italian to Mexican, and so much more. In particular, many restaurants are clustered on Clement Street, one of the neighborhood’s central corridors where there is no shortage of places to eat. Residents of many wide-ranging cultures have come to call the Richmond district home over the years. Originally well known for its pockets of Russian and Chinese culture, this neighborhood has always been an eclectic melting pot of people from every corner of the world with fantastic cuisine and culture to match.

5606 California sits one block from the beautiful Richmond Children's Playground and tennis courts, while the Richmond Rec Center is located 1 block in the other direction and offers classes and opportunities to engage in the local community. Technically in the Lake Street district, 5606 California sits near the boundary of the Inner and Central Richmond districts, which are bisected by Presidio Boulevard, a convenient thoroughfare that whisks you south through Golden Gate Park and towards the Peninsula / airport and north towards the Presidio, the Marina, The Golden Gate Bridge and Marin. The Pacific Ocean is less than 10 minutes down the road! Dramatic Baker Beach and China Beach (San Francisco's best-kept secret) are both about 5 minutes away by car. One of the city’s largest playgrounds, the world-class Botanical Gardens, numerous music festivals, and spectacular museums are just some of the amenities you’ll discover in Golden Gate Park, which is one of the nation’s largest city parks. In a rowboat rowing slowly along the grassy banks of  Stow Lake you’ll feel like you have been transported half a world away to Cambridge University. Spend an afternoon with the kids enjoying the miniature yachts at Spreckels Lake. Feel like something more rugged? The bison park is legendary and a unique place to view wildlife. Want to take open-air dance lessons or roller skate with friends? Some of the roads in Golden Gate Park are closed to traffic and are available for the public to stroll about, dotted with public artwork. Additionally, there are open meadows for playing ball, picnic areas with built-in bbq pits, and a lively bandstand with musical performances. The DeYoung Art Museum with its famed permanent and rotating collections will stimulate your heart and mind, while generations of schoolchildren have grown up visiting the Academy of Sciences.

The Richmond district is also adjacent to the Presidio, a vast federally-owned park where you will never run out of things to do. Like Golden Gate Park, the Presidio offers playgrounds, woodsy trails and bike paths, many of them with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Mountain Lake Park offers an off-leash dog area, tennis/basketball courts, and several picnic areas. Another favorite attraction for families is the the lovely Julius Kahn playground. The Presidio Golf Course is one of the city's most scenic attractions and also features an elegant clubhouse to unwind after a day on the links. The Presidio is also home to the Walt Disney Museum, movie and entertainment companies, a post office, several great restaurants and historical residences that used to house military officers, now converted to commercial use.

The Richmond district is also home to several synagogues including the city's largest, Temple Emanuel. There are also a multitude of beautiful churches nearby including the distinctive Holy Virgin Cathedral nearby on Geary, an Orthodox Church with whimsical domed spires.

If the Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, local bars, bookstores and restaurants were not enough to keep you occupied, the Marin Headlands and the Sonoma and Napa Wine Country regions are easily accessible just to the north across the Golden Gate Bridge. Driving north through the Presidio you'll have the opportunity to split off via the Presidio Parkway to Crissy Field, the Marina and Pacific Heights. Traveling in the other direction, nearby Fulton and Geary Boulevard offer a direct route to Hayes Valley and downtown San Francisco with a direct downtown MUNI connection making this part of the city especially convenient for commuters. Whether you work in the city’s financial district or enjoy visiting the Opera, Jazz Center or Ballet, the Richmond District offers easy transportation options in so many directions.

If you are not already familiar with the Lake Street district and the Greater Richmond district, take some time to get acquainted ... we trust you’ll never want to leave!
