Sunrise to Moonrise

Imagine stepping onto the patio of a floating home, overlooking the tranquil waters of The Waldo Point Lagoon.  This extraordinary patio captivates all your senses and offers an unparalleled experience of nature's beauty.

As you step out onto the patio in the early morning, you're greeted by the breathtaking sight of the sunrise painting the sky in vibrant hues of pink, orange, and gold. The lagoon below reflects these colors, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that seems to blend the sky and the water into one seamless canvas. You can feel the gentle morning breeze rustling through the air, carrying with it the scent of saltwater and fresh marine life.

Throughout the day, the lagoon continues to enchant with its ever-changing scenery. In the afternoon, fluffy clouds form intricate patterns against the azure sky, creating a phenomenon known as "cloud porn." These clouds cast dynamic shadows over the lagoon, adding depth and texture to the already stunning landscape. You find yourself lost in contemplation as you watch the clouds drift lazily by, each formation more mesmerizing than the last.

As evening falls, the lagoon transforms yet again, this time bathed in the soft glow of the moonrise. The moon casts a silvery trail across the water, illuminating the lagoon with an ethereal radiance. You can hear the gentle lapping of the waves against the boat, a soothing soundtrack to accompany the magical sight before you.

Throughout it all, the lagoon itself shifts and changes, reflecting the many moods of nature. Sometimes it's calm and serene, with glassy waters mirroring the sky above. Other times, it's wild and untamed, waves crashing against the shore with untamed energy. Yet no matter its mood, the lagoon always adds an extra layer of beauty and drama to the scene unfolding before you.

As night descends, the surrounding area comes alive with twinkling lights, creating a dazzling panorama that stretches as far as the eye can see. The distant glow of the city skyline adds a touch of urban sophistication to the natural beauty of the bay, blending together seamlessly in a harmonious fusion of man-made and natural wonders.

This amazing floating home offers a front-row seat to some of nature's most awe-inspiring moments, from the vibrant colors of sunrise to the serene beauty of moonrise and the twinkling lights of the cityscape. It's a place where time seems to stand still, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the splendor of the world around you.

History of the 'Hood

The roots of the houseboat community trace back to the late 1940s, following the conclusion of World War II. In the aftermath of the war, a significant portion of the Sausalito waterfront, previously utilized as a Liberty Ship construction site by both the War Department and private industry, was repurposed. Following the war's end, the area was sold off to private owners primarily for the purpose of salvaging the surplus equipment and materials remaining from the shipbuilding endeavors.

Lacking a cohesive long-term plan, the area fell into disuse throughout the 1950s. However, during this period, a resilient group of individuals from the "Beat" generation began to occupy the abandoned barges and construction buildings left behind after the war. Over the course of the 1950s and early 1960s, this community flourished, gradually earning renown as a haven for artists, writers, and intellectuals.

By the late 1960s and into the 1970s, the community experienced a significant population surge with the arrival of hippies migrating to the Bay Area from various parts of the country. However, this growth also led to inevitable tensions with newly established governmental regulatory agencies, partially formed in response to environmental concerns raised by residents of the houseboat community.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the area underwent a period of profound transformation and redevelopment. This era saw the implementation of standard building code upgrades to homes and marinas, albeit accompanied by significant challenges and adjustments for the community. These changes gradually reshaped the fabric and character of the waterfront, resulting in the diverse and eclectic population that defines Sausalito's waterfront today.
